Sunward Farms

The farm

Where the model runs.

Twenty minutes outside Évora, in a former cold-storage warehouse. The climate outside is irrelevant; the climate inside is the product.

  • Saffron threads spread on mesh drying trays

  • Close-up of a crocus flower showing three red stigmas

The site in numbers

  • 14

    growing rooms

Each with independent climate control and its own flowering calendar.

  • 3

    flowering cycles a year

Cohorts are staggered so picking never depends on a single fortnight.

  • 10 yr

    site lease

Secured through 2035, with room to double the footprint.

  • 18

    people on site

Growers, pickers, a drying-hall lead and the quality team, all local hires.

Why Alentejo

Controlled rooms could sit anywhere with power and water, which is exactly why the choice of place matters more, not less. Alentejo gave us three things: a region with deep agricultural know-how and people who wanted to stay in it; stable, affordable electricity backed by local solar; and a logistics position two hours from Lisbon's port and airport.

The site is also the template for the next hubs. Everything that runs here — profiles, grading, release — is written down so it can be reproduced somewhere else with the same results.

Visits

We host customer audits and press visits by arrangement, usually during a flowering cycle. We do not run public tours; the rooms are a controlled environment and every visit is a biosecurity event.

Students and researchers: we answer questions by email and occasionally host project placements. Write to us.

Plan a visit or an audit

Tell us who you are and what you want to see; we will propose dates around the next flowering cycle.
